dig questio [Nov. 29th, 2006|01:30 pm]
The History and Archaeology of Roman Britain

Hey guys
I've been watching this community for a while but have yet to post anything; I suppose before I get to my question I should introduce myself then!

I'm an undergraduate archaeology, classics and history major specializing in the late Republic/early Empire, roman religion, and Roman archaeology in the provinces.

My question is a bit specific, but I suspect there might be a few on here who can answer if for me:  I'm looking for digs this summer (I dug in Israel last year) and I've been interested in the Silchester Insula IX dig for a couple years now.  A group of us (myself and about five others I dug with last summer) were interested in applying and were wondering if anyone's dug here and what they thought of it?

London Waterwheel [Nov. 13th, 2006|10:56 pm]
The History and Archaeology of Roman Britain

A recent Gresham Street dig has produced internationally important discoveries showing how the Romans lifted water from wells. A difficult, deep, waterlogged excavation produced the remains of wooden box-buckets and the connecting iron links from two bucket-chains. Then another was found on a second City dig, and yet another was recognised in the records of an excavation fifty years ago. With only one Roman bucket-chain ever found before - anywhere in the empire - London is suddenly in the forefront of research on Roman water-lifting devices. We talked to excavator Ian Blair and have a full report.

Hi guys.

I have questions for you all, to try and get the community going.

* What interests you in Roman Britain?
* What background do you have? (have you studied it before? do you work professionally as an archaeologist/historian?)
* Is there anything specific about Roman Britain you'd like to know more about (maybe someone here could answer your question(s)!)?

Comment away, or post seperately if you want to write something more indepth.

Archaeologists dig up major find
02 November 2006 | 10:07

ARCHAEOLOGISTS in Colchester have uncovered a major Roman find in the heart of the historic town.

The Head gate was one of the main Roman entrances to the ancient walled settlement and was situated where St John's Road, Crouch Street and Head Street now meet.

And on Saturday members of the Colchester Archaeological Trust (CAT) found the structure's central pier, proving that the gate had two arches and not one, as some people had speculated.

The History and Archaeology of Roman Britain

Welcome to roman_britain, a place to chat about Roman Britain!
Feel free to introduce yourself, ask questions and post anything (news, pictures, etc) to spark converation and debate.

I'm currently doing a PhD on Roman Ceramics in London. My hope is to build a community of other people interested in topics around Roman Britain, so we can all learn from each other!

Enjoy :)
